Our Story
GEM Group’s story began in Mount Gambier in 1959, when Ian Sutherland established what would become a long-standing family business built around earthmoving and the needs of the local region. From those early beginnings, the business grew through hard work, practical experience and a willingness to invest in the people, equipment and resources needed to take on increasingly complex projects across South East South Australia and Western Victoria.
Over more than six decades, GEM has grown well beyond its earthmoving origins. Civil construction, road construction and surfacing, quarrying and material production, transport, building and landscape supplies, natural stone, asphalt and spray sealing, and concrete now form part of a much broader group capability. Bringing many of these operations together within GEM Group allows the business to support projects from the supply of raw materials through to construction and delivery on site.
Today, GEM Group remains proudly family-owned and based in Mount Gambier, with a strong regional workforce and operations extending across South East South Australia and South West Victoria. While the scale and capability of the business have changed considerably since 1959, the focus remains grounded in the same region in which it began, continuing to invest in its people, its operations and the communities it works within, while building on the foundations established more than six decades ago.

With operations spanning multiple sites and businesses, GEM combines people, plant, materials and technical capability to support projects from the ground up.

More than six decades of operating in the region has built a depth of knowledge that comes from doing the work, understanding local conditions and continually investing in the people and equipment behind each project. From major civil works and road construction to quarry operations, material supply and agricultural projects, GEM’s experience has been shaped by generations of practical work across the Limestone Coast and surrounding regions.
