Owner and founder Ian Sutherland started operations in 1959, providing Government bodies and private sector operators in the south east of South Australia with general earthmoving services.

His provision of a high quality service was widely accepted in the early years, with equipment and personnel numbers soon to increase.

Today, operations extend throughout south eastern South Australia and the western districts of Victoria with the original commitment to the customer remaining the driving force behind earthmoving, quarrying, contract mining, project services and other group activities.

Maintaining a company focus on the provision of quality services together with the combined experience of 100 plus dedicated staff, ensure that the GEM Group commitment to customer satisfaction will remain long into the future.

GEM Plant Hire operations continues to be the major focus for group activities and the fleet of plant and equipment comprises one of the most modern and largest of its kind in regional Australia.
